Weld Engineer - Gestamp Chassis 3, Chattanooga, TN

Job Summary

Supports manufacturing operations in an automotive / stamping & robotic MIG/MAG welding environment.

Key Responsibility

  • Implement process improvements with regards to MIG/MAG Welding systems using all available current welding technologies.
  • Maintain welding systems to ensure manufacturing activities are in within specifications and interpret and apply specifications for manufacturability (WPS, TrackIt, VQM)
  • Supervision of Weld Technician; supporting/monitoring of their day-to-day activities, T&A/scheduling, as well as training and developing of weld technicians from a MIG/MAG welding perspective.
  • Support maintenance activities and PM scheduling of weld technician responsible equipment.
  • Collects, tracks, and advises on downtime issues and implements short and long-term solutions to minimize downtime.
  • Manage and execute in-house projects for implementing new engineering changes that modify assembly processes.
  • Liaise with vendors regarding software / hardware updates and troubleshooting systems.
  • Participation in the Layered Process Audit schedule.
  • Participation in the Internal ISO/TS 16949 Audit schedule (applies only to certified ISO/TS 16949 internal auditors).
  • Participation and cooperation in answering questions and providing information for internal and external audits regarding or related to ISO/TS 16949, VDA 6.3, and customer standards.
  • Completes other necessary duties as deemed appropriate and necessary.

Key Qualifications / Requirements

  • Full scope of knowledge in MIG/MAG, resistance spot, and projection welding system.
  • Common programming knowledge of robotics and Weld controls for welding mild steel, hybrid and organic coated materials.
  • High skill set of MIG/MAG welding on mild steel and knowledgeable about aluminum welding.
  • Strong proficiency with weld control systems (Bosch DC Mid-Freq Inverters. Lincoln power supplies. Fanuc robots).
  • Strong familiarity with projection nut and stud welding.
  • Ability to work in a team-based lean-manufacturing environment.
  • Willingness to travel for training.

Knowledge and Education

  • BS: Welding Engineering, Electrical Technology, or other technical discipline plus 3 years experience in a welding/robotic environment.
  • -or- AS: Welding Technology plus 5 years welding experience in welding / robotics environments.
  • -or- 7+ years experience and training in a similar role and environment.

Work Experience

  • 3 - 7 years' experience in a welding/robotic environment
