Tool & Die Apprentice 2nd Shift Press - Chattanooga, TN / Plant 1

Role Summary 

A Tool and Die Apprentice receives work experience and job related education in all phases of the tool and die occupation, including but not limited to tool and die repair/improvement/maintenance activities as well as safe work practices, which are necessary to develop the skill and proficiency of a skilled professional.  This occurs under the guidance of a trained professional during the duration of the apprenticeship.

 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Maintain tooling to insure quality production parts
  • Read & interpret blueprints/drawings and job orders for product specifications
  • Set-up and operate manual and CNC machine tools such as Lathes, Mills, presses, grinders etc., to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications
  • Teardown, clean, maintain and repair die components and dies
  • Verify dimensions, alignments and clearances
  • Build Jigs & Fixtures
  • Reading and understanding the apprenticeship standards and signing the apprenticeship agreement; 
  • Voluntarily accepting all the responsibilities and obligations commonly recognized as a part of such apprenticeship and such others as may be assigned to the Apprentice by the Committee and/or Program Sponsor as a means of facilitating the administration of the Apprenticeship Program.
  • Develop safe working habits, and conduct oneself at all times in a creditable, ethical manner.
  • Maintaining a record of his or her work experience/training on the job
  • All other duties as assigned, including but not limited to die setting as required.

 

Knowledge and Education 

  • Must be at least 18 years or older.
  • Responsible to fulfill the obligations of related education as set forth by the Program Sponsor and for maintaining an accurate record of all hours spent in training on-the-job. 
  • All applicants must pass each portion of applicable Ramsay test or other aptitude test as established for all candidates.
  • Be registered through the USDOL and attend Chattanooga State Community College.

 

Key Qualifications/Requirements 

  • Working knowledge of measuring tools, hand tools & various machining equipment
  • Must have the ability to trouble-shoot tooling problems
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment
  • Must be able to work well with other members of the department
  • Must be willing to work any shift as Plant schedule and/or manpower requirements deem necessary. 
  • Must be willing to work overtime as required (including Sundays) to maintain all Plant functions relative to the Tool Room such as but not limited to Program Launch, die repairs, engineering change timing to customer dates/requirements, etc.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle, manipulate, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, talk and hear
  • Employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time
